Ronnie Screwvala is an iconic Indian entrepreneur. To be precise, he is one of India’s most coveted serial entrepreneurs. He is a philanthropist. He is the proud owner of a Pro Kabaddi League team. He worked as the Managing Director of Disney- UTV India. In 2014, he exited from Disney UTV India and started his own venture. His innumerable yet nascent tally of achievements is what makes him a hero. Mentioning his achievements in a book in which he had eloquently and elegantly described how he had battled out his entrepreneurial adversities, Ronnie Screwvala published Dream with Your Eyes Open: An Entrepreneurial Journey.
While nature’s fury is undoubtedly inexorable, Ronnie Screwvala took the first step of setting up a local cable TV network thereby providing services to a few homes in Mumbai. Those were the days when the words ‘entrepreneurship’ and ‘startups’ sounded Greek and Latin. Not the one to settle with the status quo, Ronnie Screwvala, who was then in his early 20s embraced the notion- “Have immense belief in your idea.” His indomitable belief in his convictions laid the foundation for his television dramas “Lifeline” and “Shanti”. Needless to say, his television dramas became popular amongst housewives. He added to his burgeoning list of achievements yet another feat – UTV Software Communications.
After establishing UTV Software Communications, he launched Hungama television channel. Hungama became an instant success among children as the channel featured Japanese animated shows and other entertaining shows. Buoyed by the success of his channel, Ronnie Screwvala launched many other television channels such as UTV Bindass, UTV Action, UTV World Movies, UTV Movies etc. From the year 2007 onwards, UTV entered into Gaming niche. Now, UTV India is one of the most sought after gaming companies.
Ronnie Screwvala set up Unilazer sports, a sports-marketing firm focused on kabaddi, football and motorsports. He is all set to launch his U Moto 250 in 2016. As mentioned in the first paragraph, Ronnie Screwvala is an altruist. He laid the foundation for Society to Heal Aid Restore Educate (SHARE) for rural development in Maharashtra. For his philanthropic initiatives, he was awarded the GQ Philanthropist of the year in 2014. He co-produced various movies such as Welcome, Fashion, Rowdy Rathore, Barfi, Chennai Express etc.
Let me wrap it up by mentioning a few of his quotes:
- Failure never stopped anybody who didn’t want to be stopped
- Entrepreneurship is a journey, not an outing.
- Failure is a stronger motivator than success.
- Dreaming with your eyes open means being alert to challenges but refusing them to let them stop you.
Dream with your eyes open! Cheers!
